Since Ben Soppitt's visit to many of the British cemeteries in Iraq late last year, I have received several queries regarding the location and current state of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintained War Cemetery at Habbaniya, 80 km west of Baghdad by road. The exact location of the Habbaniya War cemetery is 33°22'52.79"N, 43°35'30.34"E DMS and a good quality 2025 Google Earth image can be seen by entering these coordinates. The condition of the 290 graves and the headstones is good, as 289 of the headstones were re-made and re-installed in their correct positions when the cemetery was restored by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in 2019 (the last headstone has yet to be made). Since then regular maintenance has been carried out by a gardener/caretaker employed by the commission. In light of the recent attack on Iran by Israel and the US it is unlikely that anyone will visit the cemetery in the near future. For the information of 'armchair' visitors, I have produced a composite image of a satellite photo of the cemetery overlaid with the official CWGC plan of the cemetery, showing exactly where each grave is located. Note that the original plan was drawn facing south and I have kept this viewpoint for the main photo. However I have included a 3D insert of the cemetery and its surrounds, facing north. I will add this image to the main Habbaniya section of my website in the coming days, along with a similar composite image of the complete RAF Habbaniya cantonment, with the official CWGC plan overlaid on the 2025 Google Earth 3D image.
