On the 18th June 1922, two British Army officers were ambushed in Iraq. Captain Sidney S Bond MC, the Assistant Political Officer of Chemchemal in Kurdistan, was riding into Mortaka - south of Sulaimaniya, near the Bazian Pass - with Captain Robert K Makant MC (and Bar) who was about to take over the role from Captain Bond. Accompanying them was local leader Kerim Futteh Beg and two native orderlies, with the visit arranged for the purpose of setting peace terms. However, before they reached the village and were riding through the pass, the party was ambushed by the two sons of Kerim Futteh Begg and thye two captains and two orderlies were fatally shot in the back. The bodies of Captain Bond and Captain Makant were later retrieved and returned to Baghdad where they were buried at the Hinaidi RAF Peace Cemetery (now known as the Ma'Asker Al Raschid RAF Cemetery). The headstones of the two officers have survived to this day, of the 77 headstones that have survived the passage of time in complete or partial condition (see attached images). For more information and photos of the two captains, their story can be seen on the Great War Forum website.
