On this day one hundred and two years ago, on the 17th March 1924, the crew of a 45 Squadron Bristol F2B Fighter Serial Number D8099 died in the crash after the engine of their aircraft failed whilst taking off from RAF Hinaidi. The pilot Flight Lieutenant Walter H Ryder and his observer / gunner LAC Kenneth Turner, both serving with 45 Squadron Royal Air Force, were buried side by side in the Hinaidi RAF Cemetery (now known as the Ma'Asker Al Raschid RAF Cemetery) in Plot 3 Row G Graves 11 and 10 respectively. Sadly their headstones are not among the seventy-seven (77) headstones that have survived over the intervening years out of the total three hundred (300) burials at RAF Hinaidi but I have attached a photograph to this post that was taken of Plot 3 back in 1929, with their headstones coloured in red, LAC Turner on the left and Flt Lt Ryder on the right. May they rest in peace.
